Often a Good Trim Is All a Tree Needs

A lot of people call us expecting a tree to come down, and it turns out it just needs a proper trim. Taking out dead branches, lifting limbs off the roof, or thinning a heavy crown can make a tree safer, healthier and better looking, and it costs less than removing it. We’ll look at the tree with you and tell you straight what it needs. Then it’s your call.

When to Call for Trimming

• Branches over the roof or touching the house. They scrape shingles, drop leaves in the eavestrough and give squirrels a bridge onto the roof.
• Dead or broken branches. Dead wood up in the canopy can drop without warning, especially in wind or under snow and ice.
• A crown that’s too thick. Heavy, dense canopies catch more wind and block light to your lawn and garden.
• Low limbs in the way. Branches hanging over the driveway, sidewalk or patio.
• Branches crowding wires. If limbs are near the lines running to your house, let us know when you call. Branches near the main power lines on the street are handled by the hydro utility.

How We Trim

Good pruning is about taking the right branches, not the most branches. We cut back to a healthy point on the branch, so the tree can close the wound properly, and we avoid stripping the inside of the tree bare or “topping” it. Both of those make a tree weaker, not stronger.

The main kinds of work we do are:

• Deadwood removal: taking out dead, dying and broken branches.
• Crown thinning: selectively removing some inner branches to let light and wind through.
• Clearing branches off the roof and away from the house.
• Crown raising: lifting low limbs over driveways, walkways and lawns.

When’s the Best Time to Trim?

Many trees are easiest to prune in late fall and winter when they’re dormant and the leaves are off, because you can see the structure clearly. Dead or hanging branches can come off any time of year. Every trimming job ends the same way: branches hauled away, chips raked and the driveway swept. You shouldn’t be able to tell we were there, except the tree looks better.
