Stump Removal vs. Stump Grinding
There are two ways to deal with an old stump, and they’re not the same job:
- Stump grinding chews the stump down below the grass. The roots stay in the ground and break down over time. It’s quicker and usually the cheaper option. See stump grinding.
- Stump removal takes out the whole stump and the main roots. It’s more work, but it clears the spot completely.

When Full Removal Makes Sense
- You’re building on the spot. An addition, a shed, a deck footing or a pool.
- You’re putting in a new garden bed or planting a tree in the same place and need the ground clear.
- Roots are causing problems. Lifting interlock, a walkway or the edge of the driveway.
- The stump keeps sending up shoots. Some trees sprout from the roots after they’re cut.
How We Remove a Stump
We dig around the stump to expose the main roots, cut them, and lift the stump and root ball out. The hole gets backfilled so it’s level with the yard, and the extra soil, wood and roots are hauled away. As always, the area is raked and tidy when we leave.
Before We Dig
Underground lines like gas, hydro and cable often run through front yards. Before any digging, locates need to be done so nobody hits a line. In Ontario, Ontario One Call arranges locates for free. We’ll talk it through with you when we give you the quote.

Is stump removal better than stump grinding?
Not always. Grinding is quicker and usually cheaper, and it's enough if you just want to re-sod. Full removal is better if you're building or planting in the same spot. We'll price both.
How much does stump removal cost?
It depends on the size of the stump, the root spread and how easy the spot is to reach. We give you a free quote in person the same day you call.
Will the stump grow back?
