When Roots Become the Problem

Sometimes it’s not the stump that’s in the way, it’s the roots. Big surface roots can lift interlock, crack a walkway, heave the edge of the driveway or make the lawn impossible to mow. After a tree has been removed, the roots can also get in the way of a new garden, fence or addition.

Removing Roots After a Tree Is Gone

If the tree has already been cut down, we can take out the stump and the main roots together with full stump removal. We dig around the stump, cut the major roots, lift out the stump and root ball, backfill and level the hole, and haul everything away.

Roots From a Living Tree

Cutting large roots from a living tree is a different matter. The roots anchor the tree and feed it, so cutting big ones can make the tree unstable or cause it to decline. If roots from a healthy tree are damaging something, we’ll look at it with you and tell you honestly what the options are, including whether it’s safe to cut them at all.

Surface Roots and Grinding

For roots running along the lawn surface near an old stump, stump grinding can often grind them down below the grass at the same time. This is quicker than digging them out.
