Hollow Tree Trunk in Richmond Hill?

The short version

A hollow trunk is not always a death sentence. Trees carry their strength in the outer shell of wood, so a tree with a thick, sound shell can stand for years. The worry starts when the shell gets thin, the opening is large, or the hollow sits low near the roots on a tree that leans over the house.

How urgent? Have it looked at this week

Most hollow trees aren't about to fall, but you can't judge the shell thickness by eye, and a big tree near the house deserves a proper look.

What to look for

  • An open cavity you can see into or reach into
  • A hollow sound when you knock on the trunk with your knuckles
  • Soft, crumbly wood or sawdust-like material at the opening
  • Mushrooms or shelf-like conks on the trunk or at the base
  • Cracks running up or down from the cavity
  • Carpenter ants or woodpeckers working the same spot

Maybe you noticed a dark opening at the base, or a raccoon climbing in and out of a hole halfway up. Maybe you knocked on the trunk and it sounded like a drum. Either way, the question is the same: is this tree still safe to have next to the house?

The answer depends far more on what is left than on what is missing.

How a Trunk Goes Hollow

Hollows almost always start with a wound, then a fungus, then time.

An Old Wound Lets Decay In

A torn branch, a bad pruning cut flush against the trunk, lawn mower scrapes, or storm damage years ago can expose the inner wood. Decay fungi move in and slowly eat the heartwood, which is the older, inactive wood in the centre of the trunk.

The Tree Walls It Off

Trees can’t heal wounds the way we do. Instead, they wall the damage off and grow new wood around it. That is why a tree can look healthy, with a full crown and new growth every spring, while the middle of the trunk is rotting away.

Animals and Insects Finish the Job

Carpenter ants, woodpeckers and squirrels enlarge an existing hollow. They rarely start one in sound wood, so their presence tells you decay is already there.

Why Some Hollow Trees Stay Standing

A tree trunk works a bit like a steel pipe. Most of its strength sits in the outer ring, not the centre. A tree that has lost its heartwood but kept a thick, healthy shell can carry its crown for decades. Very old maples and oaks in Richmond Hill parks are often hollow and perfectly stable.

The rule of thumb arborists use is about shell thickness compared with the trunk’s size. When the remaining sound wood gets thin, or a large open cavity cuts away a big part of the ring, the trunk loses strength quickly. You can’t measure that from the outside by looking, which is why a proper check matters.

Red Flags That Change the Picture

Some combinations move a hollow tree from “keep an eye on it” to “deal with it soon”.

  • A big opening. A cavity you could fit your head into, especially on the side the tree leans toward.
  • Hollow at the base. Decay at the root flare weakens the anchor point.
  • Cracks from the cavity. Splits running up or down from the opening mean the shell is already flexing.
  • Fungus conks. Shelf-like brackets on the trunk show active decay inside.
  • A heavy crown over a target. A wide, full canopy over the house, the driveway or the neighbour’s yard puts more load on a weakened trunk.
  • A thinning crown. Dieback at the top suggests the tree is struggling overall.

What You Can Do Before We Arrive

Take a few photos: the whole tree, the cavity up close, and the base. Note any lean, and whether it has changed. Keep kids from climbing into or onto the hollow. Don’t poke a long rod deep into the cavity to test it, and don’t fill it with anything. Old-style cement or foam fillings trap moisture and hide what is happening inside.

If an animal is living in the hollow, let us know. Timing the work around nesting season matters, and we will plan for it.

Hollow Trees Around Richmond Hill

You see the most hollow trees where the trees are oldest: the big silver maples and willows around Mill Pond, mature street trees in Richvale and Crosby, and the large maples and oaks on the deep lots of Bayview Hill and Observatory. Silver maples are especially prone, because they grow fast, wound easily and decay quickly once rot sets in. On the sandy soils of the Oak Ridges Moraine near Lake Wilcox, trees can also struggle in drought years, which makes old wounds more likely to rot.

The rules matter here too. Under Tree Preservation By-law 19-25, any private tree 15 cm or wider at chest height needs a City permit before it is removed or seriously injured, and replanting securities or cash in lieu may apply. Trees near ravines, woodlands or on the Oak Ridges Moraine can carry extra protection. For a hazardous tree, ask the City how its process works, since it can differ.

Keep It, Lighten It or Take It Down

When Scott comes out, he looks at the size of the hollow, how much sound wood is left around it, the lean, the crown and what sits underneath. Then he gives you the honest options, which usually come down to three.

  • Leave it and watch it if the shell is thick and nothing important sits in reach.
  • Lighten the crown by taking out deadwood and shortening heavy limbs, which reduces the load on the weak trunk.
  • Take it down if the shell is thin, the hollow is at the base, or the tree leans over the house.

If removal is the right call, our dead and failing tree removal work takes it down in sections from the top, so nothing heavy drops on the roof or the fence, and we clean everything up after.

When to Call Us

Neighbours Also Ask

Can a hollow tree be saved?

Often, yes, if the shell is thick and the tree is otherwise healthy. Reducing weight in the crown can help it carry on safely. Filling a cavity with cement, as people once did, doesn't make a tree stronger.

Do I need a permit to take down a hollow tree in Richmond Hill?

If the trunk is 15 cm or wider at chest height, yes. Under By-law 19-25 you need a City permit first. Ask the City about the process for hazardous trees, because it can differ.

Why do animals live in my hollow tree?

Raccoons, squirrels and birds love cavities. If something is nesting, timing the work matters, and we will talk it through with you.

Is a hollow at the base worse than one higher up?

Usually, yes. A hollow near the root flare weakens the point where the whole tree pivots in wind.
