How Deep Does Stump Grinding Go?

Short answer: Below the grass line, far enough that you can cover the spot with soil and seed or sod. If you need it deeper, for a garden bed or planting, tell us when we quote.

Deep Enough for a Lawn

For most yards, the goal is simple: get the stump low enough that you can top the spot with soil and grow grass over it, and never hit it with the mower again. That’s what our standard grinding does.

When You Need More

• Planting a garden bed in the same spot.
• Putting in a fence post or footing nearby.
• Building something on the spot, in which case full stump removal is usually better.

Tell us your plans when we quote, and we’ll grind to suit or recommend removal.

What About the Roots?

Grinding takes care of the stump and surface roots near it. The deeper roots stay in the ground and break down over time. See grinding vs. removal.

After Grinding

The chips settle over a few weeks. Top up with soil, then seed or sod.
