Signs a Tree Is Dangerous
Watch for large dead branches, cracks or splits in the trunk, fungus at the base, a new lean with soil lifting, hollow or soft wood, and broken limbs hanging in the canopy.
Short answer: Watch for large dead branches, cracks or splits in the trunk, fungus at the base, a new lean with soil lifting, hollow or soft wood, and broken limbs hanging in the canopy.
Warning Signs to Look For
- Big dead branches, especially over the house, driveway or play areas.
- Cracks or splits in the trunk or where big limbs join.
- Fungus or mushrooms at the base or on the trunk, which can mean decay inside.
- A new or worsening lean, with soil or grass heaving on one side. See leaning trees.
- Hollow or soft wood, cavities, or sawdust-like material at the base.
- Hanging broken limbs caught in the canopy after a storm.
- Root damage from construction, digging or driveway work nearby.
What “Dangerous” Really Depends On
A tree with a problem in the middle of an open field is very different from the same tree next to your bedroom. What the tree could hit matters as much as its condition.
Not Every Problem Means Removal
A tree with a few dead limbs can often be made safe with a deadwood trim. We’ll look at it with you and tell you honestly. Then it’s your call.
If a tree is touching a power line, stay back and call the hydro utility.

Related Questions
Can you tell if a tree is rotten inside?
Fungus, cavities, soft wood and cracks are strong clues. We'll check what we can see when we come out.
Should I remove a tree just because it's big?
No. A big healthy tree is an asset. Size alone isn't a reason to remove it.
