Not Every Lean Is a Problem

Plenty of trees grow with a lean, reaching toward the light, and stay that way safely for decades. What matters is whether the lean is new or getting worse, and what the tree would hit if it went.

Signs a Leaning Tree Needs Attention

• The lean is new, for example after a storm or a wet spring.
• Soil or grass is lifting or cracking on the side away from the lean.
• Roots are exposed or snapped at the base.
• The trunk is cracked or has a split near the bottom.
• It’s leaning toward the house, the garage, the driveway, wires or a neighbour’s yard.

We come out, look at the base, the roots and the direction of the lean, and tell you honestly what we see. A tree that’s grown with a steady lean for years may just need some weight taken off the heavy side with a careful trim. A tree that’s started to tip, with soil heaving at the base, usually needs to come down. Then it’s your call.
